“What the environment mean to us” class Zine

During Spring 2025, I taught a new course titled "Gender, Environment, Justice.” As one of the course assignments, students created a collective class zine. I provided the space for students to discuss and agree on a theme for the zine and how to structure it. While I facilitated the process, this was very much a student-led project where students got to apply some of the concepts we discussed in the class (related to the relationship between gender and the environment and feminist scholarship). One of the course topics that students resonated with was the inaccessibility of academic knowledge. Zines can be a way to disseminate knowledge in way that is more accessible and engaging for wider audiences. Students were also interested in the discussion of the social construction of nature, as well as the valuing of embodied knowledge in feminist scholarship. These ideas are reflected in the prompt and responses to the prompt that students came up with: "What does the environment mean to you? And how do you relate to the environment in your daily life?"

The virtual version of the zine can be found at this link.
